| When times are tough training is often cut because we are trapped in a belief that learning does not deliver business benefits. Twenty years ago 'just in time' burst the bubble of inefficient manufacturing proclaiming products were only being worked on productively for less than 3% of their total lead time.
As a result, a "systems" approach to manufacturing enabled productivity to rise rapidly and has helped UK manufacturing climb to number 6 in the world. There is a huge parallel between this and learning where in today's learning paradigm less than 3% of all training fulfils its true potential and up to 80% does not deliver a return on investment.
The National Skills Academy for Manufacturing's simple systems approach to learning, called the Learning Engine
, helps employers, learners and training providers to work together to achieve significant returns. In our first full year our programmes have contributed over £12m to UK manufacturing.
So, even in recessionary times, it's not a case of can we afford to train but more importantly, can we afford not to train?
