QUALITY IN TRAINING

When times are tough training is often cut because we are trapped in a belief that learning does not deliver business benefits. Twenty years ago 'just in time' burst the bubble of inefficient manufacturing proclaiming products were only being worked on productively for less than 3% of their total lead time.

As a result, a "systems" approach to manufacturing enabled productivity to rise rapidly and has helped UK manufacturing climb to number 6 in the world. There is a huge parallel between this and learning where in today's learning paradigm less than 3% of all training fulfils its true potential and up to 80% does not deliver a return on investment.

The National Skills Academy for Manufacturing's simple systems approach to learning, called the Learning Engine , helps employers, learners and training providers to work together to achieve significant returns. In our first full year our programmes have contributed over £12m to UK manufacturing.

So, even in recessionary times, it's not a case of can we afford to train but more importantly, can we afford not to train?

BEST FACTORY CONFERENCE

The National Skills Academy for Manufacturing was delighted to work with the Best Factory Awards to create the Skills Award in 2008 and is now the proud sponsors of the Best Factory Skills award. At the Best Factory Conference on the 3rd and 4th March 2009, the award winners demonstrated what makes them best in their categories. Power Panels, our Skills Award winner, and the overall Best Factory shared the secrets of their success with fellow manufacturers. All category winners were on hand to share their expertise and encourage each other to strive to remain world-class.

More than a dozen in-depth presentations spanned over the two days of the Conference. They were interspersed with ample opportunities to question, debate and to network with the like-minded manufacturing folk almost always sharing common challenge.

KINGSTON UNIVERSITY STUDY PROGRAMME

Kingston University and The National Skills Academy for Manufacturing have collaborated to create an innovative study programme specifically designed for companies with under 250 staff called the Business Process Foundation Degree. Nearly 70% of the course can consist of independent, work-based projects. With the support of the University supervisor and workplace mentor, your employee will define a work project and analyse what they will learn from it. They will then carry out the project and gain academic credit for completing it effectively.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

Steve Boyd: Managing Director of
G & O Springs Limited

We have been working with The Skills Academy who have helped us devise a course for our newly appointed Team Leaders. I must admit that the experience has completely changed our attitude towards training.

As a small business we saw training as a necessity for meeting legal requirements; The Skills Academy has changed our approach. In the future, all training will be determined by a genuine business need and all will be evaluated to see what bottom line benefit can be obtained.

Thanks Skills Academy!
